But despite being a relatively new town (in comparison to other places in California), Lake Tahoe has been inhabited for thousands of years. The Washoe people were hunter-gatherers who lived in the region for millennia before European Americans arrived; they established permanent settlements along the shores of Lake Tahoe starting around AD 1000.

Tahoe is a pretty young town.

What's unique about Tahoe is that it's a resort town, but it was founded as a mining town. Mining played a huge role in the early growth of Lake Tahoe and its economy until it collapsed in the late 1800s.

In 1945, Harvey Gross opened the first casino on Lake Tahoe, kicking off an era of tourism that continues today.
